Mario Sobalvarro, LMFT, LMHC
"Helping Adults, Couples & Families Overcome Life’s Challenges
so They Can Live More Meaningful Lives."

We live in extraordinary times; I help my clients live meaningful and rich lives.

My name is Mario, and I have been practicing since 2015, with experience in private practice since 2019. I am licensed in both Marriage and Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling. My approach is supportive and goal-oriented, helping you move toward a place where your relationships can grow and your connection with yourself can strengthen.

Stress can come from many areas of life, including our closest relationships, our work environment, and even the broader uncertainty of the world around us. You may have once felt skeptical about therapy or seen yourself as someone who handles things on your own. Over time, many people come to recognize that having the support of a trusted professional can make a meaningful difference.

My goal is to provide a space where you feel heard, respected, and understood, no matter what challenges you are facing. I am especially passionate about helping couples in distress, families navigating conflict, and individuals working through trauma.

I also have a strong focus on supporting first responders and veterans, including those impacted by combat-related experiences. In addition, I work closely with men through individual counseling to help them build the insight and skills needed to show up more effectively in their relationships, including couples therapy.

Life can feel overwhelming at times, but change is possible. With the right support, you can regain a sense of clarity, direction, and balance. I am here to help you build on your strengths, navigate challenges, and move toward a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

I provide counseling in English and Spanish for teens, adults, couples and families at our beautiful offices in Fort Lauderdale and Coral Springs. I invite you to take this step and begin the process of meaningful, lasting change. Give me a call for your complimentary consultation so we can discuss how I can help you and your loved ones.

My Counseling Services in Fort Lauderdale and Coral Springs

Couples Therapy:

I work with couples of all ages who are navigating challenges such as conflict, infidelity, feeling disconnected, differences in parenting styles, financial stress, and tensions with extended family.

In our work together, I help couples gain clarity around what is happening in their relationship, strengthen communication, and rebuild trust and connection. My approach is collaborative and goal-oriented, focused on helping you move out of painful patterns and toward meaningful, lasting change.

Together, we identify practical steps and tools that support healing, deepen understanding, and create a stronger, more connected partnership.

Family Therapy:

When one family member is struggling, it often impacts the entire family system. Challenges such as marital conflict, parenting stress, or issues related to substance use can create tension and disconnection within the home.

As a systemic therapist, I work with families to understand these patterns and create space for healthier communication, stronger relationships, and shared solutions. When appropriate, I involve family members in the therapeutic process to help everyone feel heard, supported, and aligned in working toward meaningful change that benefits the family as a whole.

In my work, I draw from integrative, evidence-based approaches including Family Systems Therapy, Relational Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. This allows me to tailor treatment to each family’s unique needs while supporting long-term growth, connection, and resilience.

Counseling for Men:

My approach to working with men is to meet them where they are and support them in navigating the challenges they are facing in the present moment. I help men create balance across the key areas of their lives, including their relationships with partners, children, family of origin, and their work environment.

When men are feeling stuck, disconnected, or uncertain about their direction, I work alongside them to build a stronger sense of purpose, connection, and clarity. Together, we focus on identifying strengths, developing practical tools, and improving both their relationship with themselves and with others.

With my training and licensure as a Mental Health Counselor and Family Therapist, I also support men who are considering couples therapy. I help them clarify their goals and prepare for the process so they can engage more effectively and create meaningful, lasting change in their relationships.

Veterans and First Responders:

My approach to working with first responders and veterans is grounded in both clinical training and personal experience as a Combat Veteran myself. I understand the unique challenges that come with serving in high-stress, high-responsibility roles, and I strive to create a space where clients feel understood, respected, and supported.

I work collaboratively with my clients to process difficult experiences, build effective coping strategies, and reconnect with a sense of balance and purpose. Whether you are navigating the impact of trauma, stress, or the transition back home to civilian life, my goal is to help you move forward in a way that feels meaningful and sustainable.

I draw from a range of evidence-based and integrative approaches, including trauma-informed care, EMDR Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Family Systems, and Hypnotherapy. Each approach is tailored to meet your individual needs and support lasting growth and resilience.

My Story

Born and raised in Nicaragua, now a naturalized American Citizen. I received a La Salle education from elementary school to high school. My family emigrated in the early 1980’s due to the war and political persecution.

My American experience has been challenging and edifying. I joined the US Army and attended University while on Active Duty. While serving in many capacities, I learned about basic pharmacy operations, anatomy, physiology and leadership.

Overseas as a Combat Medic, I traveled the world and after graduating with a Bachelor’s degree from Park University, I worked in Public Health as a Disease Specialist. Shortly after, I was recruited to work as Pharmaceutical Representative for Pfizer in their Psychiatry and Neuroscience division.

My exposure to these fields confirmed my natural inclinations and for the appreciation of my fellow men; through the lens of human psychology, I found my calling. With a solid grasp of  medications, especially psychiatric medications, I resolved to synthesize education, experience, and my passion for behavioral science and obtained a double specialty degree in counseling with licenses as Family Therapist and Mental Health Counselor.

Since 2015, I have worked in various settings helping desperate families facing addiction in their teenagers, military veterans, recovery institutions, and now in private practice. I specialize in working with couples, families, and men facing distress and trauma. As a collaborative therapist, I partner with an interdisciplinary team, especially with psychiatry practitioners to ensure medication optimization and safety.

I feel deep gratitude for this country and its people… you can say that I have a nice slice of the American Pie. I am fluent in English and Spanish and provide therapy with ease in either language. I welcome people of all backgrounds in my practice. I truly enjoy learning about all cultures of the world and tailor my approach, respecting everyone’s identity and heritage.

Since 2015, I have worked in various settings from helping desperate couples on the brink of divorce, to families facing addiction in their teenagers, I have worked with military veterans, and within recovery institutions. During my time in the military, I offered counseling for couples facing painful diagnoses.

Now in private practice, I specialize in couples, families, and men facing distress or trauma. I am comfortable with clients of different social strata and different age groups, from teens to people in retirement. I partner with psychiatry practitioners to ensure medication optimization, effectiveness, and safety. I also form alliances with fellow counselors, depending on the role I am in with each client, these approaches ensure quality of care and better outcomes.

I feel deep gratitude for this great career, I have had great mentors who helped me build an acumen to better assist couples, individuals, and families. I am fluent in English and Spanish at University level and I am also a qualified translator, I however attune myself to the style of my clients. I have offered therapy in both languages simultaneously while in session, during my entire career.

Just For Fun

My free time is to recharge and build great memories with my wife, children and grandchildren. I love to travel the world with my wife and especially enjoy the local cuisines. When we travel in the US, we make it a point to map local restaurants endorsed by Guy Fiery from Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. I enjoy watching movies and discussing the twist and turns of the plots with my best friend, my wife.

I feel great when I can take a 10 minute drive and enjoy an afternoon at the beach. I love to feel the sand on my feet while reading an inspiring book. I also enjoy riding my bike in my community and greeting my neighbors as I ride. I have a preference for old classic street bicycles, I own a 30 year old one.

I plan two or more trips per year to visit family and friends in different states and other countries. I enjoy music and occasionally venture into Karaoke.

I collect Rhinos for they have a special meaning to me. I can tell you more about it when we meet. All these, I see as quality of life enhancers, they give me a sense of balance and renew my energies for my calling and passion, my career and the people I serve. I don’t take it for granted, I know very well that I am blessed to be able to have fun, joy, and fulfillment.
