Dr. Bluma Sapir, Psy. D.
"Helping individuals, couples, and family-pairs understand the patterns beneath their struggles so they can create healthier, more connected relationships that last."
Relationships can be one of our greatest sources of meaning, safety, and belonging. They can also be where we feel most misunderstood, reactive, lonely, or stuck.

You may love the people in your life deeply and still find yourself repeating the same painful conversations. You may understand what is happening intellectually but feel unable to change it when emotions run high.
Perhaps you have become caught in familiar roles - the one who keeps pushing to talk and the one who pulls away, the one who carries everything and the one who has stopped stepping in, the one who smooths things over and the one who points out what is wrong - roles that once served an important purpose but no longer reflect who you are or want to be.

I am Dr. Bluma Sapir, a licensed clinical psychologist with over 20 years of experience helping people understand and transform the patterns that shape their relationships.

I work with individuals, couples, parent/adult-child pairs (what I call “PAC Pairs”), adult siblings, and workplace pairs. My role is to help you create the conditions in which you discover the answers already within you - and within your relationship - so you can begin to repair and your relationship can evolve.

Together, we will look beneath the immediate conflict to understand the histories, fears, needs, nervous-system responses, and relational patterns influencing what is happening now. From there, we can begin building new ways of communicating, protecting what matters, and remaining connected without losing ourselves.

I provide therapy for adults and relational pairs in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I also offer secure online therapy for clients located in states where I am licensed, including Florida, Arizona, and Washington.

My Counseling Services in
Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Couples Therapy and Marriage Counseling:
Most couples do not come to therapy because they have stopped caring. They come because the ways they have learned to protect themselves are unintentionally making it harder to reach one another.

One partner may pursue conversation while the other shuts down. One may try to solve the problem while the other longs to feel understood. Resentment, defensiveness, criticism, emotional distance, sexual issues, or recurring conflict may begin to eclipse the relationship you once recognized.

In our work, we will examine the relational system the two of you have created together over time and slow down the interactions that repeatedly pull you into conflict or disconnection. With curiosity rather than blame, we will also explore how each of you may have learned to respond within that system - and how those responses may unintentionally keep the pattern going - so that both of you have greater freedom to create something different.
I help couples work through concerns including:

-
Recurring conflict and communication difficulties
-
Emotional or physical disconnection
-
Trust injuries and affair recovery
-
Differences in desire or intimacy
-
Parenting and blended-family challenges
-
Boundaries with extended family-pairs
-
Major life transitions, including parenthood, retirement, and loss
-
Separation, divorce, or uncertainty about whether to remain together
-
Long-standing patterns of criticism, defensiveness, withdrawal, or resentment
I draw from the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy, attachment theory, Internal Family Systems, and other evidence-informed relational approaches. However, each person is unique, so therapy can never be “one-size-fits-all.” Our work will be shaped by your particular relationship, history, values, and goals.

My aim is not merely to help you communicate more effectively. It is to help you understand one another more compassionately, respond more intentionally, and create a relationship that feels safer, more honest, and more alive.
Individual Therapy for Adults:
Individual therapy can be valuable when you feel caught between who you have learned to be and who you are becoming.

You may be highly capable in many parts of your life while privately struggling with anxiety, relationship patterns, guilt, self-doubt, grief, anger, over-responsibility, or difficulty setting boundaries. You may understand everyone around you but have trouble identifying what you need - or giving yourself permission to need anything at all.
Our work may explore:

-
Anxiety, overwhelm, and emotional reactivity
-
Relationship and family patterns
-
Boundaries and people-pleasing
-
Identity and life transitions
-
Grief, loss, and divorce
-
Parenting and co-parenting
-
Self-worth and perfectionism
-
Attachment wounds
-
Difficulty trusting yourself or others
-
The impact of childhood roles on adult relationships
-
Leadership and professional relationship challenges
I approach therapy collaboratively. I will listen carefully, identify themes, offer direct and compassionate observations, and help make complicated experiences more understandable. At the same time, I will respect your authority over your own life.
Therapy should offer more than insight. It should help you develop greater freedom to respond differently when old patterns are activated.

Therapy for Parents and Their Adult Children:
The transition from a parent-child relationship into an adult-to-adult relationship can be surprisingly difficult.
Parents may feel dismissed, unappreciated, or unsure of their place. Adult children may feel criticized, controlled, unseen, or pulled back into an earlier version of themselves. Both may want closeness while using protective strategies that create greater distance.

I help parents and adult children understand the patterns beneath their conflict, separate behavior from character, renegotiate boundaries, and redesign a relationship that allows for both connection and autonomy.

This work can be especially helpful when families are navigating estrangement, cultural or generational differences, marriage and in-law relationships, grandchildren, caregiving, competing expectations, or unresolved experiences from childhood.

Adult Sibling Therapy:
Sibling relationships are among the longest relationships many people will have, yet they are often given the least space for reflection or repair.

Adult siblings may remain caught in roles established decades earlier: the responsible one, the difficult one, the favorite, the invisible one, the rescuer, the outsider, or the child who was expected to need less. Even when family circumstances change, these roles can continue shaping how siblings interpret and respond to one another.

I help adult siblings explore unresolved hurt, estrangement, loyalty conflicts, caregiving responsibilities, inheritance disputes, differences in family narratives, and the changing relationship between siblings as parents age.

The goal is not to determine whose memory is correct. It is to understand how each sibling experienced the family system and whether a different kind of relationship can be created in adulthood.
My Approach to Therapy
I believe relationships are living systems shaped by two or more differently organized nervous systems interacting over time.

What looks like stubbornness may be self-protection. What appears to be indifference may be overwhelm. What is experienced as criticism may be a desperate attempt to be heard. Understanding the function beneath a behavior does not excuse hurtful actions, but it gives us a more useful place from which to create change.

My work is grounded in attachment, relational, systemic, and trauma-informed perspectives. Depending on your needs, I may integrate principles from:

-
Gottman Method Couples Therapy
-
Emotionally Focused Therapy and Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy
-
Internal Family Systems
-
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
-
Mindfulness and nervous-system regulation
-
Family systems and interpersonal neurobiology
I am active and engaged in the therapy room. I listen for what is being said as well as what may be difficult to say. I am comfortable working with intensity and helping people remain emotionally present when the conversation becomes painful or uncertain.

I will be compassionate, but I will also be honest. I may slow you down, identify a pattern, offer another way of understanding what is happening, or invite you to speak from the more vulnerable truth beneath a defensive response.

Most importantly, I view therapy as a collaboration. I bring psychological expertise and decades of experience; you bring expertise in your life, your history, and what matters most to you.
My Background and Experience
in the Field of Psychology

I have worked as a clinical psychologist for more than 20 years, supporting individuals, couples, and family-pairs through complex relational and emotional challenges.

I earned my Doctor of Psychology degree in 2004 and am licensed as a psychologist in Florida, Arizona, and Washington. My advanced training includes training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Internal Family Systems, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, mindfulness, attachment, and interpersonal neurobiology. My work is also informed by Esther Perel, Stephen Porges, Frances Champagne, Winnie Dunn, and Nadia Bruschweiler-Stern.

Throughout my career, I have been especially interested in the patterns that develop within families: how people are assigned roles, how protective strategies become mistaken for personality, and how relationships can change when people begin responding to one another with greater accuracy and compassion.
I am also an author and educator, devoted to understanding and strengthening pair relationships. My work extends beyond symptom relief to the deeper question of how we become more intentional partners, parents, adult children, siblings, family members, and leaders.
A Little More About Me
I am the mother of five children, which has given me a very personal appreciation for the complexity, beauty, intensity, and humor of family life.

Having lived in both the United States and abroad, I understand what it means to build a life across different cultures and communities - and to navigate the questions of belonging, identity, family obligation, and change that can accompany those transitions.

I am deeply curious about people and the stories beneath what is immediately visible. I value honest conversation, meaningful connection, family, learning, and the moments when something complicated suddenly becomes clear.
I also believe warmth and humor belong in the therapy room. Therapy can involve difficult work without every moment feeling heavy.
Why Work With Me?
People often come to me when the problem is not simple.

They may have already tried talking, reasoning, compromising, setting boundaries, or avoiding the subject altogether. They may understand the situation intellectually but find that their insight disappears when the relationship becomes emotionally charged.

I have a strong capacity to hold tension without rushing to resolve it prematurely. I can listen to opposing experiences without reducing either person to the problem. I help clients identify the larger pattern while also taking responsibility for the specific ways they participate in it.

I will not assume that I know your answers better than you do. Instead, I will help you hear yourself - and one another - more clearly.

Our work will focus both on what is needed now and on what will serve you beyond the immediate crisis: a deeper understanding of yourself, more flexible ways of responding, clearer boundaries, stronger relational skills, and a greater capacity to remain connected without abandoning your own voice.
