Why is Parenting so Difficult?
What's Wrong With Me?
There's no manual for parenting. You could read all the books in the world and take all of the courses to prepare yourself and it still wouldn't remove the stress and overwhelm when it comes to parenting your child or teen. The truth is, there is no perfect parent, kid, or family. Everyone experiences challenges to some degree, but having the right support and guidance can make a big difference!
Many parents feel ashamed and that they "should" know how to parent better and it "shouldn't" be so difficult and others blame their child for their "bad" behavior when acting out. Let me tell you... there is nothing wrong with you or your kids! You're imperfectly perfect and doing your best to navigate the challenges of life while raising another human being.
I want to paint a picture for you...

Imagine how amazing it would feel to be more confident with your role as a parent and your approach to handling situations with your child/children.

What is Parent Coaching?
Parents are not given a handbook upon leaving the hospital with a newborn baby. They are often left wondering if their child’s behavior is “normal”. They may experience increased anxiety about what to expect as their child continues to grow.
Parent coaching is a collaborative and direct approach to support parents on their journey through parenthood. A parent coach provides education and guidance similar to a handbook that is easily accessed throughout the parenting experience at different ages and stages of your child's development. A parent coach can be a sounding board to better understand your child and his or her behaviors.
Parents can receive expert guidance regarding developmental milestones, age appropriate behaviors, and ways to build a solid foundation for their child. A skilled parent coach will also challenge the parent to reflect on their own needs and areas of growth. By doing so, a parent can better manage challenging situations or implement new parenting strategies. Receiving this support throughout your child’s childhood will help your child succeed and increase your confidence as a parent.
How Can Parent Coaching Help Our Family?
Do you ever feel like you are doing the same thing over and over again expecting something different in return? Do you often think about whether your child's behavior is “normal” ? Or wonder how you can get your child to “just listen”?
These questions, and many others, are very common issues parents experience. Over time, they can cause high levels of stress and anxiety. At times, children may become labeled as “bad” or display increased resistance to your requests as these dynamics continue. These challenges often lead to family discord and chaos in the home setting.
In addition, parents often seek counseling for their child when they identify a problem or concerning behavior. Therapy provides a safe space for children to express their feelings and learn ways to better cope. This can be extremely beneficial. However, children then return to their home environment and are expected to change their behavior on their own. In order create a real change, both children and parents need to make changes.
Parent Coaching provides a unique partnership to support families through this process. Receiving parent coaching ensures you are providing your child with the physical and emotional environment for your child to thrive. Every behavior has a function and a parent coach will help you gain understanding, empathy, and create change.
Benefits for the child, parent, and family as a whole include:
-
A deepened understanding of your children’s needs
-
A focus on connection and respectful communication
-
Finding ways to honor your child’s own natural talents and gifts
-
Empowering both parents and children to work together
-
A tool box full of parenting strategies and techniques
-
Increased confidence and fulfillment in the parenting role
How Does Coaching for Parents Work?
A parent coach will meet with both parents or the primary caregiver with a focus on achieving goals related to parenting. A coach will use evidence-based strategies, education, and a non-judgemental approach in working with parents.
First, a parent coach will process areas of concern and identify parenting goals. Through this process, a parenting coach will ensure cultural beliefs and personal values of the parental unit are explored and considered. Once goals are identified, a parent coach will collaborate with the parents to develop strategies to address challenging behaviors. As the sessions continue, parents will provide feedback as to which techniques are effective and which require additional tweaking. The coach and parents will work together to find an approach that is best for the family and most effective in creating family harmony.
As parents go through the coaching process, they express feeling understood and supported not only in the therapeutic space, but throughout the week that follows. They have a better understanding of the function of their children’s behaviors and are better equipped to manage challenging situations with an increased calmness and confidence. Parents are surprised to understand their role in their child’s behaviors. They find easy ways to improve routine meltdowns and parent proactively.
Compared to typical talk therapy, parents appreciate the direct feedback and hands on approach used in a coaching session. A parent coach will teach and share strategies. Parents will have a toolbox of strategies to use, allowing them to try again if their original approach is not successful. Parents describe a strengthened relationship with their child, in addition to improvement in relationships with the spouse, other family members, and their own wellbeing.
Parents have tons of logistics to manage. Parent coaching can be provided both in the office setting and via telehealth for the parents convenience. With this service, parents can meet during a pause from work or a lunch break.
What to Expect When Working with a Parent Coach/Counselor?
If you are considering a parent coach, the first step is to schedule a complimentary consultation. Through the consultation, a parent coach will develop a greater understanding of what you are specifically struggling with and what you hope to gain from a coaching session.
Next, an initial session will be scheduled and the assessment phase will begin. Through the assessment phase, the coach and parents will identify the specific areas to target. The coach and parents will collaborate and prioritize what requires immediate attention. Then, goals will be identified and the coaching sessions will begin.
Coaching sessions typically occur on a weekly basis for about 12-15 sessions. Once parents see the desired changes, the coach/parent team will discuss a transition plan to meet on a less frequent basis while ensuring the family changes are maintained and the parents feel supported.
Parents express experiencing changes with their child and in the home setting immediately as very small changes tend to have a large impact. Once these little changes have been made, parents have more awareness of their parenting patterns. A parent coach makes parents accountable. Parents feel supported in making lifelong changes they desperately want to make for their children and family.

Common Questions About
Parent Coaching
“My child is the one with the issue, can I still benefit from parent coaching?”
Yes! There are many ways to help your child. Why not give them the greatest likelihood of success by being informed on how to best help them. The parent coach can also facilitate family or parent/child sessions to facilitate healthy communication and hear the child’s perspective on how to make improvements in the home. The parent coach will also make recommendations for outside supports that may be helpful to the child.
“I really want help but my parenting partner isn’t interested. Does parent coaching still work?”
Working with one parent can still be useful to the child and family. With one parent developing increased insight and better skills, the child will be provided with new opportunities and strategies to thrive. Also, once the parenting partner witnesses changes, he or she may be more willing to attend. The coach can discuss alternative strategies to keeping the other partner involved. Virtual sessions or phone calls can also be used to keep the partner in the loop.
“What is the difference between parent coaching and therapy?”
Parent coaching is directive and action-oriented. With a parent coach, you focus on the present and implement strategies to target future behaviors. The role of parent coach is to provide you with tools and information. In contrast, therapy is focused more on the processing of the past and its impact on the now, while discussing patterns of thinking.
