Our first meeting is usually about an hour, sometimes more depending on the situation. I will ask you a lot of questions regarding your current life stressors, past psychiatric history, and medical history.
It is important to rule out a possible medical reason for your symptoms before confirming a psychiatric diagnosis. Sometimes, many of the same symptoms we see with depression are also seen with medical complications like hypothyroidism, some cancers, or neurological disorders.
Additionally, it’s important that I get to know you, what you like, what you do, and gather information about your lifestyle. So I may ask questions about where you were born, who raised you, what your childhood was like, etc. I will also ask you about your interests, hobbies, and job status. I may ask you to talk about difficult things like if you ever felt neglected or experienced abuse or suffer from trauma. All these questions will assist me in determining what type of treatment plan is best for you.
