Understanding Autism Spectrum
Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how individuals perceive the world, communicate, and interact with others. Autism is a spectrum, meaning it presents differently in each person. Some may have subtle social challenges, while others may experience significant difficulties with communication, sensory processing, or daily living skills.

Early identification and intervention can make a significant difference in the lives of those with autism. However, many individuals may go undiagnosed for years. Whether you’re seeking answers for your child, adolescent, or yourself, we are here to help.
What is “Masking” and Why Does it Matter?
Many people with autism, especially girls, women, and adults, engage in a process called “masking.” Masking refers to consciously or unconsciously hiding autistic traits in order to fit in, avoid unwanted attention, or meet social expectations. This might look like:

-
Forcing eye contact even when it feels uncomfortable
-
Rehearsing conversations or mimicking others’ social behaviors
-
Suppressing self-soothing behaviors
-
Hiding sensory sensitivities or emotional responses
-
Adopting “scripts” for social situations

While masking can help individuals navigate social situations, it often comes at a cost. Masking can lead to exhaustion, anxiety, depression, or a sense of not being one’s authentic self. Masking can also make autism more difficult to recognize, resulting in missed or delayed diagnoses.

-
Sensory sensitivities (to sounds, lights, textures, etc.)

-
Feeling “different” or misunderstood, especially in social settings

-
Difficulty understanding social cues or body language

History of being misdiagnosed or not feeling fully understood by other professionals
