As a teen, I struggled with isolation and loneliness which led me to the arts. Within that culture, I was able to experience and express my story as well as the stories of my peers. I felt empowered and able to overcome the isolation through community until a tragic event occurred that I left me in a really dark place.
I wasn't sure how to climb out of this place until I stepped foot into a therapist office which completely changed my perspective on life. Through that process, I regained a positive sense of self and overcame my struggles. It inspired me so much that I came to the conclusion that I wanted to leave the arts as a profession to become a counselor so I could help others overcome their struggles as well.
I enrolled in school immediately and through the creative lens of my background, began studying psychology and human behavior. I found that the potential that was dormant within myself lies within all peoples and feel no greater joy in life then when I'm connecting people with their goals.
As a performer, I traveled throughout the United states and Europe using art to help motivate youth and teenagers through assemblies and presentations. In 2010, I co-founded the “House of Drums” which is a community based weekly outreach event for dancers to come and share and express themselves in a diverse environment. I knew that as much as I love the art, I cared even more about those I helped through the art.
During my studies, I worked as a counselor in alternative educational programs. I graduated from Nova Southeastern University with my Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy.
I’ve also worked at various community agencies providing therapy to youth and their families to help them overcome behavior concerns as well as emotional distress. This experience allowed me to truly engage the community and see the power of change one family at a time.
As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I have experience providing therapy to those dealing with anxiety, depression, abusive relationships, drug addiction, parenting, anger management, couples counseling, and trauma recovery. Most recently, I pursued my vision of owning my own practice and founded Avant-Garde Therapy with the drive to continue aiding young professionals and adults with a fresh approach to their personal struggles.
I love to learn!!! It may sound boring or not so fun but it really is a source of joy. Without formal education, I found myself wanting to learn various skills and have been able to teach myself:
How to solve a Rubix cube
And a few other skills. If you haven’t noticed, I like to entertain largely because for a long time that was my career. I am a Panamanian Indian, try to say that 5 times fast (haha), and really enjoy stand up comedy.
